In our homes the areas that leave us vulnerable are the doors and windows as these can be weak points especially if theses are old. Sometimes it’s important to actually walk around the outside of your house and think about your security from the point of view of a burglar. That way you can see the weak points.
The first thing to check is that your windows are all double glazed with all the glass intact and that the window shuts fully sealed with no gaps around the edges. To increase the security you can also add things such as sash jammers to your windows which are catches closed and locked from the inside to stop the windows being forced open from outside.
Next check the doors to ensure that there is no way the door can be forced open or that the door doesn’t have a weak point such as a glass panel that’s single glazed or an old lock that could be forced open from outside. Also check the condition of the door as old wooden panelled doors can become weaker over time if the wood deteriorates.
By making these basic checks you can make any necessary changes to improve the security of your home.
